The Brand Formerly Known As Zeebaan Designs: Honey From The Moon by Natalie Kimani: On TDS Blog post
What is in a name? Did it matter when Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) dropped the Y for their ready-to-wear collection and rebranded it to Laurent Paris? Or that we’re not quite sure which name P. Diddy/Puff Daddy/ Sean Combs /Pop diddy pop?? A name is very much a part of first impressions and has the power to derail new and potential shoppers from their daily routine to stop and look at your creation. If we’re being honest with ourselves, we’ve changed our stance on a product because a specific brand deemed it worthy of fashion praise (sheepishly raises hand as double-denim convert). But from the designer’s point of view, it can help lead you into the direction you’ve always envisioned for your growth process. As scary as it may seem, a name change could do your brand some good. Honey from the Moon, formerly known as Zeebaan Designs, took the plunge in 2015 and TDS talks to co-founder Yonathan to find out about their experience so far:
Design and Own
I have always had a great fascination with style and design. Particularly, with functional artistry - craftsmanship that produces materials of such high quality, that one may consider them equally beautiful and practical. Especially when it comes to bags, which are often lovely to look at but impossible to use or vice versa (helpful in daily life, but physically unappealing, I believe this balance is crucial - if one aims to stand the test of time.
Meeting Yonathan transformed this dilemma for me. Though I had long known that I wanted to venture into the design world myself, I knew also that it would require the perfect collaboration, due to my full time performing artist’s career. But here was the problem! Who could I possibly find to create a style item with, which also had a limitless imagination, a critical eye and a flare for chic originality?
...I still remember the first day I visited HONEY from the MOON Studio.
Buried in piles of fabric samples and scrap leather, I felt like a child in a candy store, who had been invited to customize their own candy! HONEY from the MOON team absolute attentiveness to the details of my own unique style allowed me to space to conceptualize such a specific vision for my bag. He did not impose his tastes, but rather encouraged my own, asking me what colors excited me, what shapes felt nice to carry on my body and what accents made me feel like this bag would be absolutely one of a kind.
